About Me

My Background

image1

My name is Gigi Goknur Olguner.

I started painting and forming an appreciation of fine arts when I was a teenager, though it was my literature major in college and graduate school that guided me to base them on stronger grounds.

After I moved to the United States in 2000, I continued my studies on photography and digital media.

I am a lifetime resident artist at Torpedo Factory at Old Town Alexandria as a mixed media painter and illustrator since 2005.

During this time I have also participated in various art exhibitions.

Currently, I travel back and forth to Europe as well as teaching digital media and photography courses at Universities as a visiting professor.

My Medium

My technique has changed considerably over twenty years as a creative artist. More and more maximalist, figurative, and abundantly contoured, my more recent works have grown out of a history of minimalist abstraction that explored geometric variety and spatial depth.

This stylistic transition owes to a lifelong shift from cerebral to visceral intention.

My work originated with a pursuit of self-expression through technical mastery: a careful, calculated application of widely accepted principles. But often, the neuroses of technique obstruct the richness of spirit.

Exhibition of illustration is in the works; constant theme, coupled with the backlight, will contribute to an additional perception of continuity. Although the backlight is an element of digital art, the thrust of my work is still mainly a hand-drawn illustrations and paintings.

My Inspiration

My biggest inspiration is the cosmos itself.

Detailed representation of deep, lengthy meditation on emotional dynamics that characterize a three-dimensional world in its own right.to start on the blank print page, then populates with shapes.

maximize the perception of depth through backlight on transparent paper.

Familiarity with and internalization of way overtime has freed me to listen more closely to what it is I aim to express.
